Can my primary care provider or OB-GYN manage my HRT, or do I need a menopause specialist?
Many women get started on HRT through their primary care provider or OB-GYN — and that’s a great first step. But it helps to understand what each specialty is actually trained to focus on.
Primary Care Providers (PCPs) are trained to manage:
• General health (blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid, diabetes, etc.)
• Preventive care and annual exams
• Acute issues like infections or injuries
• Chronic disease management
PCPs work hard to keep you healthy overall — but menopause is not a major part of standard PCP training.
OB-GYNs are extensively trained in:
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Fertility and reproductive years
• Surgeries (hysterectomy, laparoscopic procedures, etc.)
• Routine gynecologic exams and screenings
Even though OB-GYNs see women daily, the post-reproductive years — perimenopause and menopause — receive very little structured training in residency.
Why see a menopause specialist?
Menopause care is different.
Hormones are highly individualized and dosing is nuanced. Symptoms can shift month to month. Delivery methods, timing, safety considerations, and symptom patterns all matter.
At The Menopause Clinic, we:
• Personalize HRT based on your actual symptoms, history, and goals (we have been trained on the over 40 known symptoms of perimenopase/menopause)
• Adjust estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone strategically — not “standard dosing”
• Offer close follow-up so you’re not stuck on a dose that isn’t working
• Troubleshoot side effects
• Use evidence-based menopause guidelines, not outdated fears or generic protocols
If your PCP or OB-GYN started your HRT, that’s wonderful.
But if you're still having symptoms, not sure what to adjust, or being told “everything looks normal,” a menopause specialist can help you get the most effective, tailored results from hormone therapy.
Q: Is it safe to prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) through telehealth?
Yes! HRT can safely and appropriately be prescribed through telehealth. Decisions about treatment are based on your detailed health history, the symptoms you have and how they affect you, a review of any available lab results, and ongoing communication between you and your provider.
Q: Do I still need in-person exams?
Yes. It is expected that all patients continue routine clinical exams and preventive screenings with their primary care provider and/or gynecologist. These include breast exams, pelvic exams, cervical cancer screening, and other age-appropriate tests that are essential for your overall health.
Q: What guidelines do you follow?
At The Menopause Clinic, we follow evidence-based care standards, including the guidelines of The Menopause Society, to make sure your care is both safe and effective.
Q: Are you legitimate?
Absolutely. The Menopause Clinic is a real medical practice based in Louisiana. Our providers are licensed, credentialed, and experienced in menopause and perimenopause care. We prescribe and monitor treatment in line with national standards and The Menopause Society guidelines, and all visits are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms.
Q: Will I ever need an additional in-person exam before starting HRT?
Sometimes. It is expected that all patients have routine clinical exams and preventive screenings with their primary care provider and/or gynecologist. Based on medical discretion and your individual circumstances, we may recommend an additional clinical exam prior to starting or continuing HRT. This helps ensure your treatment plan is safe, personalized, and aligned with best practices.
Q: Do I need lab work before my appointment or before starting HRT?
We do not order labs before your appointment. It is important to us that we get to know you, your symptoms, medical history, and goals before we order labs or prescribe medications. Will you need labs before starting HRT? Not always. According to The Menopause Society guidelines, lab tests are not required for most patients before beginning HRT—treatment can often be started based on your history and symptoms.
In some cases, your provider may recommend bloodwork (for example, checking thyroid, cholesterol, or hormone levels) to guide treatment or rule out other causes of your symptoms. Ongoing labs may also be advised depending on your specific situation, treatment, and overall health.
And if you want labs, we can help with that too — we’ll order them for you and make sure the results are reviewed and factored into your care plan.
Q: Do you take insurance?
We don’t bill insurance directly, but most patients use insurance for labs and prescriptions. If you’re eligible, we can also provide superbills for you to submit for possible reimbursement.
Q: Will my medications be expensive?
Usually not. Most of our patients use their insurance at the pharmacy and pay only a small copay — sometimes nothing at all. If you don’t have insurance, we’ll work with you to find the most affordable options available.
Q: Is this only for menopause?
Nope! In fact, most of our patients are in perimenopause, which typically starts in the late 30s through the late 40s.
Q: Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. There’s no long-term contract — just real care, month to month.
Q: Can I do everything remotely?
Yes! All consults are done by secure video visits, and most prescriptions and labs are ordered electronically. The only exception is testosterone: you will need to be seen in person before prescribing, and if that applies to you, we’ll discuss it together.
Q: Why use telehealth for menopause and perimenopause care?
Telehealth provides a convenient and effective way to manage menopause and perimenopause symptoms, while still ensuring you stay connected with your broader healthcare team for in-person care when needed. And because discussing your symptoms can feel personal, it’s important you’re in your comfort zone—whether that’s your desk, your kitchen table, or even your couch.
Q: Do you see out-of-state patients?
We can see patients that live out of state, but you must be located in Louisiana at the time of your visit.
